Cinematic Storytelling Core/3

Get hands-on experience with the entire filmmaking process. Functioning in a range of creative and technical roles including: Director, Cinematographer and Editor, you'll collaborate with other students to produce a piece of digital content.

Edit 1: The Art of Editing Core/3

Video editing can be a very powerful visual storytelling tool. Using Adobe Premiere Pro, you will use montage, screen direction, continuity, and stylistic concepts to edit a narrative scene.

Cinematography 1 Core/3

This course offers you hands-on practice in lighting, staging of scenes and blocking for the camera, as seen from the director of photography's perspective. Your projects will be 16mm color film or digital with dialog recorded.

Introduction to Producing Core/3

Are youcreative producer material? You'll learn to identify and acquire the rights to material, how to raise financing and secure distribution, create a marketing plan, and work as a creative producer in all stages of production.

Sound Design for Film 1: Basic Concepts Core/3

You will be introduced to the basic elements of sound recording and production for film and television. You will learn microphone selection and placement, as well as mixing and equalization. You will use Pro-Tools software for recording Foley and automatic dialog.

Scene Production Laboratory Core/3

Develop the skills necessary to become a productive member of a film crew. You'll collaborate to write, produce, direct, and edit short scenes within a fixed schedule and a set budget.

Production Design Foundations Core/3

While learning all about how a movie art department operates under the leadership of the Production Designer, you will have the opportunity to develop the visual style of how you "see" stories come to life. The basic roles and responsibilities of the creative team will be explored allowing you to experience what it takes to create sets for filming.

Directing Actors for Film & TV Core/3

Gain experience being a director by working with actors on film sets. While concentratingon screenplay analysis, you'll direct actors through the rehearsal process and shooting of a basic scene. You'll learn the best way to communicate with actors to become "an actor's director".

Into the Industry Core/3

Develop the professional collateral needed to enter the entertainment industry. Create a professional website, resume, demo reel, and a personal pitch. Create and package a project to market to the industry upon graduation. (This course is cross-listed with ACT 710 and MPT 810.)

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Minimum grade of C- in all core courses and major courses

General Filmmaking Skills

  • Collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Create shorts that demonstrate a basic understanding of story structure and character development
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of the process of creating a film from beginning to end

Professional Readiness

  • Apply knowledge of roles in the film industry to select an area of specialization (Midpoint Review only)
  • Effectively showcase work in an industry-standard demo reel and website (Final Review only)
  • Demonstrate professional – level achievement through the execution of a variety of projects in area of specialization (Final Review only)

Editing

  • Demonstrate proficiency in editing and color correction programs by effectively using them in projects.
  • Complete an editorial project through locked cut to include basic sound effects, scratch music underscore, and color correction

Screenwriting

  • Create shorts that demonstrate a basic understanding of story structure
  • Write shorts where three-dimensional characters are built
  • Write shorts that contain realistic dialogue

Cinematography

  • Work effectively with various cameras, lenses and accessories
  • Design and execute creative lighting schemes
  • Effectively manage a scene for coverage
  • Apply principles of composition and camera movements to enhance the story

Directing

  • Guide a crew in preproduction, production, and postproduction to execute effective choices that serve the story
  • Create shorts that demonstrate a basic understanding of story structure and character development
  • Elicit engaging and believable performances from actors

Producing

  • Acquire or originate and develop material for a project that can be pitched in a professional setting
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in budgeting and scheduling
  • Demonstrate familiarity with negotiating film contracts (for actors, crew, locations, equipment, lodging, transportation, and catering)
  • Demonstrate understanding of the legal aspects of film production, including copyrights, trademarks, music licensing, and working with minors

Production Design

  • Support the look of films based on the director’s vision, including: choosing locations, creating settings, selecting props, and dressing sets
  • Communicate design concepts through basic drawing skills and visual presentations
